Networking with Firms

I consider myself to be a pretty social person but I always get really nervous at professional networking events. I was especially nervous because I assumed I would not have anything in common with the attorneys or be able to hold conversations with them. Donna helped me brainstorm topics where I would likely have commonalities with people. She also helped me craft follow-up emails and calls to the people I connected with at these events. I truly attribute her support in this area with helping me secure the firm I ultimately chose to work at as a 1L.

Job Applications

Career Services personnel helped me determine what markets to apply to and provided edits for my resume, cover letters, and diversity statements. However, I worked with Donna to establish my timeline for submitting applications and appropriate follow-up on those applications. She also provided a second read for each of my application materials.

Interview Prep

I did one interview prep session with career services but that was only a 30-minute meeting with them asking me really generic questions that were not tailored to any of the specific firms I was applying to, and furthermore, I had to instruct them on things that I thought were glaring red flags on my resume. All my previous work experience was in public interest so I knew that would be a point of contention for firms. I met with Donna for multiple hours and received her help in crafting a narrative to highlight my public interest experience as a positive and explain my transition from public interest into big law. She asked me questions that were specific to the firms and markets I was considering.

Follow-Up with Firms

Post-interview emails can be a bit cumbersome and overwhelming. I completed 6 interviews in one week (and I interviewed with 4-6 people at each firm). I needed to send follow-up emails to each person I interviewed with as well as recruiters. I sent Donna drafts of each email and she red-lined each of my emails.”
